Who is he really feeling…The real you or your spokesperson?

By: Taren Vaughan

First impressions…how crucial they can be. One slip of the tongue, strand of hair out of place or a fail in wardrobe selection can make that first date your very last. Your appearance along with the things that come out of your mouth are your life lines. And knowing this, we try our hardest to be on point with every single thing, no matter how much it cost or how long it takes to do.

And when it comes to this, some of us as women can get a little out of control with it, transforming into a person that we ourselves have never even seen before; a character that is completely different from our normal selves.

Just that morning, you had shoulder length hair, a simple manicure and a light coat of make-up. Date time comes around and things change with the quickness. Hair is flowing down your back, nails are a couple inches longer now and make-up is caked on extra thick. Seeing you all dolled up this way, surely a man would be impressed and want to see you again and maybe even take it a step further. Much props to you for that but did you ever stop to think that he may be expecting the exact same replica of you on a regular basis?

So now you go from weavin’ it up for one night to having to keep it up on a consistent basis. Taking numerous trips to the nail salon is now apart of your agenda. And no more stepping outside of the house bare faced with a pair of jeans or sweats on. Dolled up at all times you must be. At this point, you have to ask yourself, who has this man fallen for, the real you or the spokesperson version of you? Could he accept you in pure form, without all the extras?

I’m sure we all can agree that first impressions hold significant value. There is no doubt about that. But they are important for a reason that many of us miss. It’s true that they are what can make or break you on a first date but who says you can’t still be yourself in the process?

If you are not a woman who likes wearing added hair or spending hours on end in a nail salon, then don’t. Wearing make-up not your thing? Then rock your natural glow. Sometimes we get too hung up on impressing a guy that we lose our true images in the process.

The best first impressions are always the realest ones. And that is what he should be falling for.
The title explains it all.

The female population is quite diverse wouldn’t you say? Our uniqueness in style of dress from the way that we rock our hair sets us apart from each other. Many positive things that you can say about us women. Now on to the not so positive things, or better yet differences between us women folk and one of the biggest is being lifestyles. Some of us are used to getting nice things every now and then from our significant others. A random delivery of flowers on the job or walking into your house with a home cooked meal waiting for you on the kitchen table. Most women would absolutely adore a man like this. Oh, but not an O.P.F. That’s minor to an Overly Pampered Female.

Don’t know what an O.P.F. is? Let me break it down for you.

An O.P.F. is woman that the cake, icing, the toppings. Hell, she wants everything on the dessert table. She wants it all and is not satisfied until she gets it.

The thousand dollar shopping sprees, the expensive dinners night after night; this sister asks and this sister gets. The first amendment in her eyes the right to spend and be pampered with no limits attached.

Who is to blame for this spoiled, “Money can buy my love” type of woman?

Their man of course; his mentality is to keep her happy at all cost, even if it means racking up overdraft fees in the process. It’s all about pleasing the O.P.F. She is used to glitz and glamour and her man will see to it that nothing has to change.

See, some women get used to a certain lifestyle. Some women are used to their man not being able to spend endless amounts of money on them and are very content with whatever he is able to do for them. On the other end of the spectrum, there are those who have grown quite fond of the “good life” that they have been living. Being overly pampered is not a privilege to them; it’s damn near a right. And if you try to take that right away from her, all hell will break loose. The attitude starts flarin’, the mouth starts runnin’ and most of all, the denial starts setting in.

They can’t quite grasp the fact that they can’t ball out like they used to because their man has suffered a pay cut or they have had that “pink slip delivery”. Things have totally changed for their family financially and buying a new pair of Louboutin shoes is not top priority on your man’s list.

Downsizing is the focus now. Trying to figure out how to pay the bills is the focus now. Bills first, Dooney and Burke, second.

The O.P.F.’s have a hard time understanding this though. “No” is a word that they have grown unfamiliar with and is non-existence in their vocabulary. And “broke” is one that they try to dodge like a bullet. Simplicity is a stretch and hard to stomach for them.

So until the men who are in relationships with them grow some serious balls, they will always be sure to catch a case of an O.P.F.

Do you ever truly benefit from being a good woman and when will it happen?

By: Taren Vaughan

When, Where or Will it ever happen period? These are the three questions that many women out here searching for love have. And ironically, these thoughts are coming from the minds of those who have a lot going on for themselves, not only career wise but morally as well. The women who stay loyal to the ones that could care less about returning the favor and who go out of their way time after time to mend their broken relationships with men who couldn’t give a one good damn about saving anything.

Puzzling how these are the sisters that get left hanging all time isn’t it?

As crazy as it seems that things go down like this a whole lot more often than they should, it is even more mind-boggling to the women who actually have to deal with the nonsense. How is it that a woman who truly embodies all of these great qualities gets overlooked for the female who brings absolutely nothing at all valuable to the table?

As this horrible pattern continues on, over and over again we will see a woman put her best foot forward in her relationships, doing all of the so-called “right things” and yet they still seem to crumble right before her eyes. Will that ever come to an end for her? Will she ever truly get her payback for being the good woman that she is?

Good woman meets good man and they live happily ever after should be the storyline that we should see unfolding for a person like this. But the reality of it is that the most fabulous females are treated horribly before they start to see their efforts pay off. And mind you, when I speak of a fabulous female, I am not talking about the one stuntin’ and showing off in her favorite pair of stilettos on a night out with her girls. I’m talking about the woman that carries herself like a lady and with an extreme amount of class to go along with it.

Looking at this type of women, with some of them being your close home girls, relatives or even your own self, you start to ask, “When exactly will they finally get to experience the good side of things and truly reap what they sow when it comes to relationships?”

Now of course you know that all the good girls of the world have to go through that infamous string of jackasses before they end up finding anybody worth keeping around for more than a month or two. That trend there is reserved for all females, the good and the not so good ones. We can’t jump straight into the arms of that one amazing guy overnight, although we wish that it worked that way.

Exceptional women and good men alike go through some of the very same BS repeatedly, leaving them often wondering if their efforts are going in vain. The faith that they once had in settling down in a good, healthy partnership begins to slowly fade. To their surprise though, somewhere out there is a person that will recognize, better yet, appreciate, all of the things that they do. All of the random gift giving for no reason, the way that they are always there for people at the drop of a dime and the compassion that they show towards people will stop going unnoticed.

So to that good girl whose heart never gets a breather from being broken even though she does everything in her power to soothe and comfort those of the men in her life, her day is right around the corner. And if she is you, when the one who you are truly supposed to be with comes around, trust me, you will forget about all the other losers that made their way into your life.

Your big payback…it’s on its way. Just make sure that you are ready to receive it.

Have your past dating troubles led you to hold your guard up way too strong?

By: Taren Vaughan

After years of dating, many of us have had the opportunity to come in contact with some rather “interesting” characters along the way; some of which we end up in serious relationships with for months, or even years at a time. Despite the dating woes that many of us have had, there are a number of women out there who are lucky enough to have the chance to be in those types of relationships. And for those who do manage to dodge the losers out there, find themselves in the best partnerships that they have ever experienced. But as those who find their matches, a lot times you have get into a handful of bad relationships before you get to the good stuff. Bad part about that is that they can be some of the worst ones ever, ones that you had no business being in the first place. And these horrible partnerships are a leading cause as to why certain women have a hard time letting their guards down and freely expressing their emotions and feelings like they once did before.

Why do we have a tendency to do that? Put up our guards and become overly protective of our hearts the way that we do?

Honestly, after all the crazy BS that some women go through with men that they are involved with, who can really blame them for putting their guards up? And when you are talking about a female who has repeatedly gotten her heart broken by not one, but a string of different men in her lifetime, it’s especially hard for her to re-develop that sense of trust that she once had before in men, if she ever does.

As we feel for the sister who is struggling with this at this very moment, what about the brother who is next in line to come her way? Thanks to the asshole that came before him, the task of getting to know her and coming close to her heart has become just that much harder to do. But what happens though when it gets to the point where every man that even acts like he is making his way in your direction is harshly rejected without being given a mere ounce of a chance? This is the point in time when holding up your guard can become a problem.

Having your guard up too strong will not only keep the bad men away. But it will push the good ones right out the door along with them.

I think we can all safely say without getting a verbal confirmation from our male counterparts, that men don’t like dealing with women who have excess baggage. Bag ladies are probably number one, or at least come in a close second when it comes to women on their lists to stand clear of when it comes to dating. Nor do they take kindly to the self proclaimed ice queens either. What man is going to waste his time going after a woman who openly admits she has no heart or feelings whatsoever? Men like to chase us now, but they don’t like to make themselves look like complete fools in the process.

As much as we hold on tight to our guards, they can be the very things that keep us from finding true love. And yes, true love does really exist. It’s not something that some random person made up. No, you shouldn't become naïve and think that no man can do wrong and is incapable of mistreating you. Everybody, man or woman, should protect their hearts to a certain extent. But becoming an ice queen and throwing the towel in on finding your soul mate will get you nowhere fast. And will probably have you living the single life for much longer than you would like to be.

So ease up on that choke hold that you have on your heart. And keep in mind that not every man that steps to you is on a mission to break it.

Is a man ever too young or too old to steal your heart?

By: Taren Vaughan

A good man is not a person that you bump into on a daily basis. And you usually find him when you are not even looking for anything serious with anybody. He has all the things that you have been searching your whole life for. It almost seems like he is too good to be true at times. A real gentleman he is and knows how to treat you like the queen that you are. But there’s a slight problem with this wonderful person that you have grown so attached to. He is not quite on your level…Your age level that is.

For some women, this is not even considered a problem at all. The age of the men that they are in relationships with is irrelevant simply because of the fact that the men know how to handle themselves like mature adults, even if their ages don’t reflect it.

On the other hand, robbin’ the cradle or looking like somebody’s daughter instead of their girlfriend is not the look some females are going for. Women with this mindset, a man’s age can play a huge role in whether or not he stands a chance with her. And depending on how pressed she is about it, he may not even get her phone number let alone a relationship. Not everybody is trying to pull a page out of Vivica and Mariah’s book.

Does it ever come to a point where a man is just way too young or too old for you? When the age gap between you two is just down right ridiculous?

A few of our readers gave their take on how important the age of the man that they are dating is:

“Me personally, I don’t think there is an age limit when it comes to love. As hard as it is to find good men out here, I think us women should be a little more lenient when it comes to the age of the men that we date. I have dated men older than me and younger than me. And let me just say that the younger ones treated me much better and were much more mature than the older ones, surprisingly”

-LaTasha M.
Age: 39
Baton Rouge, LA

“Age matters to me when it comes to guys, simply because I know that women mature faster than men do and for me to date a man that is significantly younger than me would be backtracking in a sense. I normally date men my age or ones that are older than me. But trust me, I still have had issues with both”

-Angela G.
Age: 29
Newport News, VA

“A man can only be a few years younger or older than me. Anything past 5 or 6 years is a little too much for me”

-Yolanda L.
Age: 25
Charleston, SC

From these comments alone, it is obvious that we all have different opinions when it comes to the age of the men that we get involved with.

Some of us go after guys that are a lot younger than us, just for the thrill. It’s the “cougar” in some women that steers them towards the youngsters all the time. Then there are those that are looking to have a sugar daddy on their arm, buying them everything and spending crazy amounts of money on them. Forget the fact that this man is damn near old enough to be your father.

Why would a woman do this to herself? Get involved with a man that is nowhere near close to her age?

One thing we always forget is that love knows no age difference, even though we can clearly see it for ourselves. It’s hard to keep yourself from falling for a person just because your birth years don’t look good on paper beside each other.

But as love holds no age limit, exactly how old are we talking here?

A few years age difference is pretty harmless, even though it can be an instant turnoff for the picky people of the world. But when the age gap gets into the double digits, it can get quite interesting and hard to deal with. What if you want to have a family one day? In this scenario, age does matter; both yours and his. With something like that, it’s more about health factors than society’s approval than anything. There are a lot of things that should be considered when it comes to dating outside your age group. And I'm not even talking about the shallow ones. Ultimately when it comes down to it though, you just really have to know what you are getting yourself into. And know for sure that this is a man that you can see yourself happy with, whether he is a few years shy of you or not.

Which man are you really trying to have on your arm?

By: Taren Vaughan

Finding “The One” is not something that just happens overnight, although we wish it was that simple. It can take years of dating and rubbing elbows with a few douche bags here and there before you will come across a man that you could potentially spend the rest of your life with. And knowing that it can take this long prior to you even stepping your foot onto the dating scene can lead some of us to become overly anxious. So anxious that we will put our search of Mr. Right on the back burner and resort to picking up the next best thing to him…Mr. Right Now. Very similar in titles, these two men, but trust and believe there is a huge difference between them.

Allow me to break down Mr. Right Now.

Mr. Right Now is a man who will do for the time being. He is not deemed as “The One” by any stretch of the imagination because most likely, you probably only know the bare minimum about this dude. You know his general information that a stranger off the street could pick up on during a casual conversation with him. He is not the worst there is out there. He must be a tolerable individual and not a flat out asshole for you to have him around. But all in all, he is most definitely not the one that you could see yourself spending the rest of your life with. Too many personal flaws stop him from even being in the running for that. Overall though, he is the one that is just right to have on your arm for now. Nothing serious at all are you looking for with this man.

Doesn’t sound too much like the man you’ll want to walk down the aisle with.

So if Mr. Right Now is such a fail waiting to happen, why do so many of us go after this type of guy?

Loneliness, that’s why.

As frustrating as dating can be looking for the man of your dreams can become discouraging, time consuming, all of the above. And lead us to put our quest for true love on pause. And this frustration usually results in us getting with a man simply to fill that void until the real deal comes along. Is that really the way to go though? Getting with a guy just for the hell of it just because you are getting tired of looking for the person who you could spend the rest of your years with?

Mr. Right Now may seem very tempting as he is just enough man to get you by for the moment. But what happens when he over stays his welcome? Just because you have labeled him as “the man of the hour”, doesn’t mean that he is aware of his real purpose with you. That brother may really believe that he is something special to you when in actuality he is nothing but a temporary love. Now, you are stuck with a man who you knew from the start was just supposed to be a around for the meantime; A man that you know good and damn well is not up to par when it comes to what you are looking for in a life long partner.

What’s the biggest difference between Mr. Right and Mr. Right Now?

Mr. Right is the one that every woman should be in search of if they are honestly looking for a partnership that will last longer than a month. He is the one that meets the relatives and friends. He is the one that you look to build a family with. He is the one that provides you with moral support and is loyal to you and the relationship that you have with him. And if you are truly trying to find a man who you can do all of these things with, there is really no place for Mr. Right Now in your life. Leave him to someone that is just trying to have a little fun to satisfy their boredom and disgust with the dating pool.

When you are on a true mission to find a good man to form a solid partnership with, think about what kind of man you are going after. You may try to convince yourself that you are looking for Mr. Right. But before you make that claim, take a good, long look at the man that stands beside you. Is he really what you are looking for in a future partner? Or is he just a five day fix to your loneliness?

Why is Valentine’s Day the only day that he expresses his love for you?

By: Taren Vaughan

Valentine’s Day is the day that many women look forward to and many men dread because they have to often spend hours on end doing the one thing that a lot of them hate to do…shop. However, this day of love can bring a lot of joyous moments for couples who choose to celebrate it. Engagement rings are given, anniversaries are celebrated, and a number of beautiful things can come from February 14th. As all of these things are very wonderful, in the midst of the good that arises from Valentine’s Day, a lot of the fakeness comes out of people too. One of the biggest things being them dropping the “I Love You” phrase.

Saying that you love someone isn’t a bad thing to do. Being in love is a wonderful thing and any of us who have truly been in love know that firsthand. But when you feel the need to say it only because it’s Valentine’s Day, that is a problem. And if this is the only time of the year when your man has the sudden urge to do something nice for you, that ain’t the business either. Crazy thing is though that some women are just fine with this. Since we have a tendency to be very competitive when it comes to our relationships, if our man does something special, and for some women “special” means “expensive”, for us on V-Day, he suddenly becomes a saint in our eyes. And has us braggin’ to our girls about what he bought us and how much money he spent. In the process of glorifying your "Prince Charming", you totally dismiss the fact that this man has been a complete asshole to you for the other 364 days out of the year.

You mean to tell me that a man could treat you like pure trash for an entire year and just because he steps his game up for one day, you are screaming that he is the best thing in the world? Be for real. Just because he does this does not mean that for one, his actions are sincere. Secondly, why can’t he seem to be more like this everyday instead of just for this 24 hour period? Love is supposed to be a year around thing. Not something that is only shown on select holidays or whenever he gets the random urge to do so.

Am I being too harsh about a day that is supposed to be so full of love?

May seem like it but I have to kick the truth about all this. Speaking for myself, I have never been big on a man spending insane amounts of money on me. Do I like nice things? Absolutely I do. What woman doesn’t like being wined and dined from time to time. But when it all comes down to it, wouldn’t you rather your man have some meaning behind the things that he says and does for you? And not do it all for show?

If it comes down to a guy spending the very last dollar in his pocket to show you how much you mean to him, he can save it. Because if you truly know that your man loves you, is it really necessary that he go out and spending excessive amounts of money on you for this one day out of the year? Is it really that important to you that he does that?

Quite frankly, getting an expensive gift from a man, topped off with a fake “I Love You” is not something that will warm my heart. Sincerity, honesty, and respect are the only things that do that. And there are no price tags that you can put on those. His “I Love You” should mean something. And he shouldn’t say it because he feels pressured to by a holiday where people go damn near broke just to show someone that they care about them.

True love is free of charge. It will never rip like a shirt, get lost like a necklace, worn out like a teddy bear, wither like a rose or bust like a balloon. It will never get old. And the word itself should not be abused because of the mere presence of a baby with a bow and arrow.

Are you really in love or just feel defeated when a relationship ends?

By: Taren Vaughan

As soon as a struggling relationship comes to an end, the tears, heart ache and the love confessions begin to pour out. After putting forth your best effort and making a complete fool of yourself for this man that you were so “in love with”, you still wound up being by yourself. Now you are stuck with having to watch him run off and be happy with another woman, an unbearable sight for many of us I’m sure. As one can expect, weeks and weeks of being sad and depressed will shortly follow. But once you take a break from crying your eyes out, you begin to question what it really is that you are so upset about. What is the true reason behind why you are so devastated? Is it because you were so in love with the person? Or is it more so because your ego was severely damaged by their departure?

Sometimes it’s all about that crushed ego more than anything else.

When a man leaves you, not to go be by himself in the world of the single, but to be with another female, let’s be honest, it can be a huge blow to your ego. And in case you didn’t know, having an ego is not just a man thing. We have them too and can let them get the best of us at times, especially when it comes to relationships.

Some of us flat out think we are way too good for any man who has an ounce of sense in his head to leave. Never would a man do that. Think we are above getting our faces played, cheated on repeatedly and the ultimate, being dismissed. So when it finally does happen to us, we don’t know how to act. This is new to us. And what do we do in retaliation to the unthinkable happening to us? Blame on it all on love. “I loved him so much that’s why I’m so hurt by what he did.”

You sure about that? Sure you want to put all your sorrow off on how much you loved this guy?

As much as we hate to admit it, saying that you were “so in love” is a statement that we run with entirely too much. And it’s not always the cause of those tears that you shed. Is it too far fetched to say that maybe, just maybe, you felt like a loser, defeated because he left you?

Having to deal with the fact that you were not successful in keeping your man and maintaining the relationship that you all had is enough to make you feel like a failure. Facing defeat is not something that anyone, man or woman, does with ease. So the easier thing to do to spare yourself from having to accept that you took a “L” in this one, is to claim that love was involved, when in actuality it was nowhere to be found.

Really think about it. Which one is it that you are truly experiencing? A real heart break or a harsh dose of defeat?

Now it could very well be a mix of both depending on your situation. You could be genuinely in love with a person but at the same time suffer from a damaged ego. No one is saying that’s impossible. But a lot of times, it’s that defeat that has you so sick, not love.

Love or Defeat…Do you know the difference?

Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you have to settle for any ole man.

By: Taren Vaughan

Thinking that you may end up a lonely old woman is a strong fear that many women have. It’s especially one that a lot of us sisters have developed after having seen the statistics when it comes to the likelihood of African American women finding love. And let’s just say that the numbers are clearly not in our favor. And now thanks to these lovely facts that so many of us hang on to and live by, the mentality of the single black woman, or I should say some of them, has started to change.

We have become so determined to beat the odds of our “dating woes”. But that determination has turned into desperation, having some sisters runnin’ around like chickens with their heads cut off, trying to find a man. And not a GOOD man, just any random man that comes their way.

Is it really that serious? Are you that pressed to the point where you will date just about any guy that shows you the slightest bit of kindness or attention?

There’s one small problem with that though. Every man who appears to be a good guy isn’t and probably has other motives behind his “sweet acts”. And if you are in such a rush to get into a relationship with him, or worse, take this stranger to the alter within a matter of weeks, you will totally miss that and will be stuck with a loser for the rest of your life. Even though our society seems to not value marriage as much as they did back in the day, trust that some of us out here still think it’s just as serious as it was before. So finding the right man to share it with, not just the first one that comes your way, is important and the key to a successful union.

We all want to find true love one day. But it doesn’t have to be tomorrow. Give yourself some time to really see what it is that you want in a partner, someone that you want to spend the rest of your life with. What kind of qualities should he possess? Is he a God-fearing man that values his family and is morally sound? Think you might want to know these things before coin this guy as “the one”. But you are on a mission here so you don’t have time to worry about those things right? Wrong.

We get so caught up on the fact that everyone around us is getting into relationships, getting married and starting families that we begin to feel rushed when it comes to finding our own happiness. And will damn near snatch up the first man that comes along just so we can say that we have somebody.

Whose time clock are you on? Your own or your friends?

The very moment that they find love may not be the same time that you do. There’s a different story line for each and every one of us when it comes to this thing we call love. But because you are not getting any younger and everyone that you are associated with always gives you a constant reminder of that, you begin to feel the pressure of needing to settle down. Yes, we are getting older by the minute and no, each day is not promised to us. But rushing into a relationship or being with someone that you aren’t completely feeling is the one for you all out of fear of being alone is not the business. In due time, you will find a man that is made just for you. And you will find that happiness that you have been searching for.

Calm down and take a breather. Mr. Right will come to you eventually. Just give it time.

The best relationships that we have stem from friendship.

By: Taren Vaughan

Developing that strong bond between yourself and another person is something that just doesn’t happen overnight. It takes spending time with that person, having frequent conversations with them on a regular basis, you know, the normal things that you do when you are trying to get to know a person. Dating someone that you have no type of previous association with is cool, not knocking that at all. But what about dating someone that has been in the picture for years? Someone that you have really grown to know over an extended period of time. Despite what some people may think, getting into a relationship with a close friend could very well be the key to your happiness.

Think back on some the best relationships that you have had for a moment. Were they ones where you just jumped right into a relationship with a guy that you knew for all of a few weeks? Or were they the ones where a true friendship has involved prior to? My guess would be the ones where you all were friends first.

That is one of the most positive things about dating your friends. You have already established that real connection with each other. And because of that, you know a decent amount of their likes and dislikes, how they handle certain situations that are faced with, essentially the whole nine. The trust, commitment, communication; all of those things are already there between you two, things that all partnerships need to have. Granted, there may be some things that have been kept under wraps, but for the most part, you know everything there is to know about that person. So you can pretty much skip over that whole “getting to know your man” phase. He was your friend from jump so you already have this part in the bag.

Not to say that if you don’t have a friendship with your man before you two get in a relationship means that it will be doomed to hell from the very start. That’s a far-fetched to assume. But when you come into it already knowing a lot about the person that you are about to be with, it makes life so much easier for the both of you. You don’t have to go asking around about him and what he did in the past. No background checks and sending out nosey girlfriends to dig up information on him will be necessary. You most likely already know everything for yourself.

Though it may sound like an instant win to a lot of us, getting into a serious relationship with one of your homeboys can be a little scary to do. There’s always the thing where if it doesn’t work out, it may ruin the friendship that you had with that person. Up to this point, you have only had been in a friendship with them. They could be a certified jackass as a boyfriend. Yes, this could very well happen. The love fest that you thought you two were going to have turned out to be one of the worst dating experiences that you have ever had. But if the friendship is strong enough and based on something real and positive, I doubt you will have that problem on your hands. Besides, if he is good enough to be your friend, then he is probably well worth a shot as your boyfriend.

With any relationship that you find yourself in, there will be ups and downs that you will face as a couple, whether it’s with a long time friend or not. But who better to go through these things with than someone who has had your back from the start; A person who genuinely has your interest at heart and is not afraid to tell you when you are getting out of line. Wouldn’t you rather take a chance with a person you have known for a minute than to take a chance with a total stranger? I know I would.
Why do you miss me once I walk out of your life?

Loyal people are truly hard to find these days, especially when it comes to relationships. People who are always there for you when you need them, who do anything they need to see you happy and just all around have that potential to be that solid partner that anyone would want in their lives; well anyone expect you. Here this person is, doing everything that you ask of them and more. They go out of their way to help you when you most need it and can really accept you for who you are. And you still continue to brush them off like it’s nothing. After shutting them down one time too many, this person that was once head over hills for you has had enough. And they have now made it a point to keep their distance from you.

The daily phone calls and text messages you get from them become less and less. And depending on how bad their feelings are hurt, you may get removed from their friends list on all social networks too. You are now upset at the fact that they removed themselves from the picture completely. So you go out of your way to try to get in contact with this person. Blowing their phone up, sending Facebook messages left and right and even tweeting about them sporadically when you think no one is paying attention.

What has gotten into you? You didn’t want them when they were all in your face. You could have cared less when they were doing nice things for you to simply show you how much they care about you. But now all of a sudden you are thinking about them, wondering where they are and what they are doing? Now that doesn’t make much sense. Wait, I get it. You thought that person wasn’t going anywhere? Thought they would be around forever?

If an individual is a true catch, a person who really has it together in all areas, what made you think that the next man or woman wasn’t going to come along and snatch them up? When you don’t take the opportunity to make things official with that person, someone else will gladly come and take them off your hands. The problem is we think that won’t happen. A lot of us have in our minds that the people who are crazy about us are going to be right by our side forever. And that’s just not how things play out most of the time. Getting dismissed over and over again is not something that people will continue to do. A change will come sooner than you think.

It’s funny how we begin to miss someone once they are gone out of our lives. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. But is that really the case? Do you really miss that person as much as you say you do? Or is it that you just honestly thought that they would never leave? Sometimes, I think it can be a bit of both. Either way, it all comes down to the fact that we take for granted the people who are really there for us; the ones who prove to us a million times over how much we mean to them. The sad thing about it is that when we finally come to our senses and see that just maybe this person is worth a chance, it’s usually a little too late.

Passing up the opportunity to be with someone who has proven to you that they really want to be with you and who is sincere about it seems crazy right? But we do it all the time. As unimaginable as it may seem, one day that person won’t be there. And your opportunity to make things work with them will become non-existent, simply because you left everything up to chance. Leave it up to chance if you want to. One day you will wake up and that person will be with someone else, never to look your way again. Are you really willing to risk that?
Do you leave your friends hanging when you find a man?

By: Taren Vaughan

Good men come a dime a dozen is what most of us have come to believe. The good men shortage theory has been embedded in the minds of women of all races; yeah, it’s not just us sisters who are feeling this way. So when a woman finds a man that has himself together and she is compatible with, she makes sure that she does what she can to make things work. She may cook a little more than she used to or even shell out some cash to add a few more fabulous items to her wardrobe. Some women get so sprung on their new guys that they ditch some of her closest girlfriends for a people that they have known for all of five minutes.

Dropping your friends like a bad habit is a common act of a woman who has fallen head over hills for a new man. Did I say “new man”? Correction, friends can get kicked to the curb for ex flames too. Friends can get shown the door for the new and the old. It works both ways. Going out with the girls becomes a thing of the past. And all of your free time is devoted to your male companion. Your friends begin to call you out, saying that you are acting brand new because you have a man on your arm now. What is your response to them? “Oh they’re just jealous”.

Actually my dear, it’s not that your friends are hating on you and your man’s relationship. That’s always the first thing that people say when their friends mention the lack of time that you spend with them. A lot of times, your friends are happy that you have found your match, especially if you are one of those women who have been through a string of bad relationships. But that doesn’t mean that they want to be completely put on the back burner for a dude, regardless of the amount of time that you have known him.

The biggest question here is what happens when your love fest with this man comes to an end? And he leaves you high and dry? Who will you run to then? Surely not the same group of females that you left hanging when he was in the picture. Fact of the matter is those are probably the very first people that you will go crying to after it’s all over. For those strong, solid friendships, your home girls will be there when this happens. They understand that you were, like Anita Baker would say "caught up in the rapture", so they aren’t tripping on you too hard. Oh but that’s not always the case for some women; some friends don’t play that and will look at you all sorts of crazy for even thinking that you could come looking for their company and comfort after a break-up.

Don’t let being in a relationship ruin those wonderful friendships that you have established with your girls. Ultimately, they are the ones who have your back when you are single and when you are “with boo”. Just like a good man, good friends too are hard to find. So you best hold on to them. Nobody ever said that you can’t have a man and still keep your friends. You can have both. But totally brushing your friends off for penis is not cool. Get it together.

It’s easy to master one of these but can he be all three?

By: Taren Vaughan

Thinking of your ideal mate, what are some things that you want them to be? Should they be someone that you can hang out with, without being bored out of your mind? Should they be someone that knows how to hold it down in the romance department? Most importantly, should they be a person who you can genuinely trust, who knows everything there is to know about you? It’s not too hard to find a person who has at least one of these qualities. But what about someone who has all three? He is the homie, the lover and the friend. Let us break down this ideal partner that I am speaking of:

First, there’s the “homie” side of your man. Very similar to a close homegirl, he should be someone that you don’t mind kicking it with on a regular basis. Whether it be catching a game on TV or going out to one of your favorite night spots for a few drinks, you can share some good laughs with this guy and really let your hair down when you are around him. Even though you clearly don’t have a penis, he can still look at you as one of his boys in a sense. We all, or I hope, can keep it real when we are around our homies. So if consider your man to be just that, no need to put on a front when you are in his presence; he gets to see the real you just like a close girl friend would.

Now on to the “lover”. The lover in your significant other goes a little deeper than “homie status”. Here is where the romance and intimacy comes into play. Your partner should know how to set the mood and really know how to keep the flame going in your relationship. It’s one thing to connect with someone on the homeboy/homegirl level. But it is a totally different story when it comes to how well they can successfully woo you on a romantic tip. Being an ideal lover takes a lot more than a good game of pool. Leave that to the “homie” side of him.

Out of all three sides of your partner, the “friend” part of them is the most important and truly is the one thing that holds your relationship together. The true definition of a friend is someone that you can trust wholeheartedly; a person who despite your flaws can see the good in you when others don’t. At the same token, they don’t have a problem telling you about yourself when you get out of line.

Having that true friendship with your significant other can make a world of difference when it comes to how strong your actual relationship is. How can you possibly have a solid partnership when there is no trust or sense of comfort involved? You always feel uncomfortable talking to your man when you are upset about something he did or said. Or he has done something that has totally rubbed you the wrong way and you choose the silent route in fear of his response. A real friend wouldn't let that fly at all. The friendship aspect of a relationship is very much needed. Without it, the other two “sides” are pretty much null and void. No true relationship can survive without a friendship involved somewhere in it.

A “HomieLoverFriend” can be so hard to find these days. Running across a person who truly embodies each of these aspects seems to be virtually impossible to do. The way the dating pool is these days, you’re lucky to find a decent partner yet alone someone who has this total package that I am glorifying. It always seems like he or she has one part down pack but lacks terribly in the other areas. It may appear that these individuals are nowhere to be found. But they are most definitely out there. A HomieLoverFriend may not come knocking at your door right away. But once you do find them, that someone who gives you an equal yet satisfying dose of all three of these sides, hold on tight to them. They may just be a keeper.

Just like R. Kelly, Mr. "Bump-N-Grind" himself, used to say, “A HomieLoverFriend is what I’m looking”. I don’t know about you, but I definitely feel him on that one.

Why is money the deciding factor in love?

By: Dawn Marbury

In this brave new world, cash rules everything around us- not excluding dating. Throughout history women have been subjected to pre-arranged marriages, being sold off as dowries, and even the oldest profession of prostitution as a way of living the good life and having male attention. Only in recent history women have been granted the freedom to choose her mate. Ironically many women have chosen to bank their future not on the premise of love but on money. Gold digging is no longer a sport for the groupies as every day ladies are cruising the streets looking for Mr. Big 401k. Some man with a big wallet isn’t always Prince Charming on a white horse, even if he can afford the carriage ride.

Men are the new women. In this day and age men are courted and pursued like the way women were in the not so distant past. The most sought after men are the not the ones with the biggest hearts, but the biggest income. Looks, intelligence, personality, and even compatibility are no match for a Daddy Warbucks. Rich guys even have sugar daddy websites further solidifying the power of his almighty dollar. The douchebaggery behavior that many of these Primo Don divos exhibit is overlooked and ignored as they flaunt their benjamins like food for women who seem to be as hungry as starving Africans for money attention and affection. Some of these guys even let their appearance fall off as no one cares how fat and unhealthy they are as long as the checks keep rollin’ in. Always the discriminator, these hefty high rollers wouldn’t dare date a woman as unfit or unattractive as they are. Many are just playboys trying girls out as women compete for them like they are training for the 2012 London Olympics. Jumping through the hoops of his heart may take years as the winner of the prize is often the one most willing to put up with unsavory bullsh-t. Even as the number of available men seem to decrease, the regular guys don’t stand a chance against ol’ money bags. What is it about these rich guys that seems to permit women to compromise on the most basic of their needs to chase the waterfalls of mansions and Mercedes Benzes?

The regular guy can’t win for losing. He falls back as the Miss Independent’s of the world pass him by in the races of prestigious positions at work only to be badmouthed and belittled by women that won’t date him because he isn’t rich. Rich losers are exalted and regular guys get lumped in with Federlines in the dating hierarchy. Around the way boys have become disillusioned with the bold rejections they receive at the manicured hands of women, demasculated because they aren’t taken seriously. Sure they may be a Mel Bushman, but they never see the respect and admiration they need that their rich counterparts bask in. Women talk, behave, and expect totally different things from the regs. At one hint of impropriety these guys are cut off with the quickness, while rich douches string women along until they’re done with them. Even if they share interests, jokes, and good times with the modern-day chica, these connections are dwarfed by the dollar. Unable to figure out what women really want, lots of these guys settle for nights out with the boys and strippers when they need the undivided attention of a female.

Life isn’t cheap. The cost of living grows higher and higher and the finer things in life seem more accessible than ever. Hypnotized by MTV Cribs and The Real Housewives, we look at glamor as something to be magically bestowed upon us rather than earned. The financial advantages of the few as seen as the sole symbols of success and equated with happiness. As money plays a huge part in what we can experience in life, love and true companionship should be the anchor of every relationship, even if the relationship isn’t equipped with a yacht. To sacrifice who you are and what is authentic to you for financial gain is an unecessary toll in a cold world, especially when the best things in life are free.

In love, hope isn't always good thing, if that's all you really have.

By: Amanda Anderson

As we pursue love, we will encounter all types of men. We'll run into the bad guys, the in betweens, and the most desirable creatures that we refer to as the "good men." Throughout the hunt, there will be many moments when we don't walk away with anything tangible--but instead mixed feelings oozing with complexity. We give our time and precious moments to men who we deem worthy of our best, and then we hope that we will receive their best in return. It only seems fair that we would get what we put out to everyone we encounter in our quest for real love. But that's the thing with fairness: what's fair doesn't always come to pass. And with some people, the only thing you will ever truly have with them is hope. With hope comes expectations and rarely will those expectations be met.

It's no secret that women are the most emotional of the two genders. We rely on our hearts in moments we should rely on our brains, and we tend to see the finish line before the pistol even goes off. There's no trace of gun smoke, and we're already claiming a victory. Sure, that man is a pretty good man according to our near-impossible set of standards, but that's only part of the battle.

A few months in, and you're still headed nowhere. You are giving this man your undivided attention, yet there's still nothing concrete between the two of you. The talks of a possible relationship have decreased as the months pass by, and you're still hoping that something more will happen eventually. You may think that you could possibly have a good thing--but all you really have is hope.

You hope that it could grow into something more, some good lovin', and a definite relationship; but he keeps on dragging his feet as if he knows that you ain't going nowhere. Why? Because he knows you'll settle for hope. That's all you really have now, yet you're still there and he's peeped game.

As women, it's situations like these that we should never place ourselves in. There is nothing more precious than time, yet we'll allow just about anyone to waste it.

Men are practical creatures. They do what they want and move at a pace that makes sense to them. You can be the best woman to ever walk the planet, but that doesn't incline every man to be with you or agree that you're the best thing since sliced bread. While this does not in any way diminish from who you are as a woman, it's definitely your cue to move it along, and leave those hopes to the younger girls who don't know any better. Grown women don't want hope, we want stability. And to get stability, you must let go of all that is unstable.

Simply put, if he wants you, he'll go get you. Until then, there's no need to wish upon a star that he will wake up and realize how great of a woman you are. Wishes were good enough when we were young and blowing out candles on birthday cakes, but there comes a time when you want to do more than satisfy your sweet tooth, hell, it's time for some nourishment.

And why be with a man that can't even see what you see in yourself? If you ever get into a relationship, you'll continue to spend most of your relationship proving your worth. Can you imagine always having to fight to meet a man's expectations when he isn't even concerned about yours? It's exhausting and self-demeaning. You're better than that and you're surely better than a relationship that won't go any further than good wish upon a star.

No man, no matter how great he may truly be, deserves the right to put your happiness on hold. No one should have that much power, and we shouldn't settle for fantasies, hopes, or wishes when we're blazing trails in other areas of our lives.

But as human beings, it’s quite natural for us to hope for many things. It was hope itself that landed a black man in the White House—but maybe hope is more dangerous than we’d like to believe...even if it does make history in some instances. Someone is going to lose, and it’s usually the person who hopes. If a man isn't actively pursuing you, keep your options open.

Save yourself the time and only get serious about men who are serious about you. Life's too short to settle for hopes that will never materialize, and you deserve something real.

Independence shouldn't mean bitterness.

By: Amanda Anderson

The Feminist Movement has created a new creed of women: the fearless and unconquerable independent woman. Let's be clear, it's commendable for any woman to take on the challenges of succeeding on her own, paving her own way, and taking care of herself. Who wouldn't celebrate a woman who refuses to depend on a man to come and save her from life's many obstacles, but instead saves herself? But there also comes a point where women may mistake independence with forsaking men all together. And that's the biggest mistake any independent woman could ever make.

The independent woman may be immune to defeat, but is she really immune to love? And if she is, why would she want to be?

Now there are some independent ladies that have had horrible experiences with the other gender. They let their guard downs for men who were unworthy, and gave their hearts away to men who had no plans of returning the romantic gesture.

Many sleepless nights and disappointments turned this woman's heart cold, and a surge of bitterness leaves her unable to love and unable to trust. It's understandable as it's painful for a woman to get her heart broken against her better judgment, but it doesn't mean that men are somehow irrelevant to the equation of better days.

In love, we will pick the wrong men before we pick the right man. All of our disappointments, no matter how painful, are teachable moments in love and relationships. The independent sister must not forget that she too needs love, and it's hard to ever get love if you view men as the enemy, and allow bitterness to consume you and have you thinking that you could live without romance.

The independent woman just wants to be strong and survive in a cold world full of people that she can't technically depend on. It makes sense, but it's easy to mistake strength for something totally different: cowardliness. There's a lot of independent cowards out here labeling themselves as independent women. What does strength mean to you?

There's two ways to look at strength: survival through the unexpected twists and turns of life or to shut out people or circumstances in life that you can't control. To fully live, is to understand that we cannot try to control every aspect of our lives. We can decide to endure all that comes, but in no way can we control all that comes. And real strength comes from dedication to enduring all, not picking and choosing what to avoid.

It's easy to mistake the two since strong women feel that they must have total authority over their own lives. But it's your own view of independence that will determine the possibilities that you open or close yourself up to. Simply put, it all comes down to an attitude.

For me, independent means going to school, getting a degree, and succeeding in my career on my own since there's a 60% chance that I won't get married. It doesn't mean I don't need love. I am just prepared just in case Happily Ever After doesn't happen. Men shouldn't feel so inferior that they think we don't need them, and women shouldn't be so confused to think we don't. We both need each other. It's human nature.

Besides, God made Adam and Eve...and both were essential to mankind.

Live your life and don't be afraid to rely on yourself, but don't let independence hinder you from experiencing a love like no other. To love, is to fully live. So live abundantly, my independent sisters.

Author C. Kelly Robinson’s book “No More Mr. Nice Guy” most definitely touched on a subject that is now and will forever be held at question: “Why do good guys finish last?” As for the main character of story, Mitchell Stone, he was finally in search of the solution to his and many men out there’s life-long problem.

As with most good guys, Mitchell Stone possessed all the qualities that women would kill for in a man. He was caring, hardworking, a real sweetheart to those of the opposite sex. Unfortunately for Mitchell, his good boy ways were often times overshadowed by the brothers who had a little more swag than he did; the type of men that faithfully held down the title as “Dogs”. After being rejected one time too many, he sought help from none other than his closest male acquaintances. With track records longer than anyone could keep up with, these men attempted to coach Mitchell into becoming the dog of all dogs as a way to rid himself of his dating woes for good. From running off a list of “Dog rules” for him to memorize to planning out his approach to his new “female friends”, Mitchell was thoroughly schooled on how to become the bad guy that he never imagined that he would be. But like all players do, the once “do-right” man got caught up.

The main character dealt with the same things that most good, wholesome men are faced with. And one of those things is rejection. Men in general don’t like being rejected by women. But it is that much more intolerable for those men who know they are husband material. Being placed on the back burner for someone who in your eyes is not nearly as deserving of love and affection that you are can be a hard pill to swallow. Seeing all those trifling, lazy, self-absorbed guys get more women than they can handle is like a slap in the face. But is that a man’s cue to abandon his good name for a moment in the player spotlight?

Sure, it may feel good to have women falling all over you and never having to worry about being by yourself. But you have to keep in mind, this is not who you truly are. And before long, the extended vacation that you take from your true self may land you in some situations that you can’t get out of. At the end of the day, it’s not worth the risks. And as for the main character Mitchell, his risk resulted in a little more than a slashed tire. And he potentially costed himself the real woman of his dreams, Nikki Coleman. So you see being a player is not all that some of us make it out to be. Jumping in and out of bed with nameless females, having to master how to lie at the drop of a dime to cover up your tracks can be pretty tiring after awhile. My advice to all of the “Mitchell Stone” type of brothers out there is to keep doing what you do. No need to resort to being a player. Your time will come, trust me.

Does "The One" really exist?

By:Amanda Anderson

As I learn more and more about relationships, I am continuously asked the same question from men and women: Do soulmates really exist? There are many ways that I could answer this question, but then I realize that most people have yet to understand real love--so I can imagine why soulmates would be a more difficult feat to master, as well nearly impossible to put into motion. Numbers pose the biggest threat to the theory, as we are selfish by nature and unable to fathom that one person out of billions is essential to our equation of forever more. But what's hard to understand isn't necessarily false; it just requires a little maturity from those who seek clarity and the truth to a question that will ultimately shape our entire lives...for better of for worse.

The theory of soulmates states that there is one person that you were created to share the rest of your life with. The connection between these two lovers is supposed to be immediate and the attraction unbreakable. To most, a soul mate equals a perfect mate and one that we instantly bond with and love unconditionally. For these listed reasons, it's easy to understand why soul mates are viewed more as fairy tales rather than a possibility we should all strive for.

I for one originally believed that one could have several soul mates. After a series of relationships, I believed myself to have been in love a few times and I could have ended up with a few different men. I chose neither of those men in the end, but for a long time I believed that I could have. And that belief is what led me to believe that we all have many soul mates, and that "the one" was just a matter of choice.

That was then, and this is now. And I realize now that although it does come down to choice, it also comes down to a little wisdom.

Have you ever wanted to change someone so they could be more compatible?

You honestly believe you love this person, but you are more in love with who they could potentially become if you do enough pushing and pulling. You could make them a more honest person, change their religious beliefs, and supply them with a little more ambition. You could change that person into the mate you need. In essence, these changes encouraged by yourself, could make an unlovable person lovable.

And there's the problem.

No where in the definition of a soul mate does it say that you need to do a little altering and fixing up. It said that the attraction was immediate and that the bond was natural.

So why are you insisting on converting a man into a soulmate when he should just naturally be your soulmate? And isn't it the pushing and the pulling that causes the end to most of our relationships? In love, there is no creation required.

Although the definition of soul mates sounds good, in it you will find flaws.

The truth is there is nothing immediate about true love. We have to get to know people and endure the obstacles of a real relationship before we can develop a bond with anyone. And this is true of friendships, as well as romances.

An instant attraction does not always equal love--sometimes it just leads to lust and heartbreak.

But that's where the wisdom comes in. Wisdom will help us decipher between meaningless flings, lust, and relationships fueled by loneliness. It also helps us discover the truth about ourselves, and puts our needs into focus as we begin to look for a partner.

And it will be wisdom again, that will save us from wasting our time and energy into fixing a lover up to fit the mold of a soulmate--when they themselves were meant to be temporary. To find real love, one must sharpen up on their wisdom.

But the theory in itself is not completely untrue, for out of billions, there is indeed one person that will be the perfect fit for us. And when I say the perfect fit, I in no way mean that they themselves will be perfect...but they will be perfect for us.

They won't need any altering, because even in their flaws we will find lovable annoyances.

This person will come into your life, and it will suddenly make sense why it never worked with anyone else. But be thankful for the others who came and left, for without them, you wouldn't be the person who perfectly fits with your soul mate.

And in that alone, we should find comfort in broken hearts and failed relationships. Without them, you'd never end up with the person that was meant for you out of billions. Just make sure that you don't miss out on "the one" for "the right now"--fixing the temporary will surely cause you to miss out what was meant to last forever.

Are you able to take the ups and downs of your relationship?

By: Taren Vaughan

Relationships can be some of the most wonderful things that two people can take part in. Spending endless amounts of time with the one you care so deeply for leaves you in total bliss. Just the mere thought of that person puts a smile on your face. Then all of a sudden, things take a turn for the worst. The constant arguing begins to occur. You two couldn’t see eye to eye if you were standing right in front of each other. Everything imaginable seems to be going wrong. And your once loving, peaceful partnership has began to spiral downhill. Then in the blink of an eye, you are on cloud nine once again. And everything is back to normal. Be that as it may, at any given moment, you know that things could change up.

True all relationships have their ups and downs. There is no secret at all about that. But does there come a time when this love roller coaster of yours should come to a complete stop?

At some point or another, we have had, or know someone that has had, a relationship like this. This relationship has its great moments, which are sometimes flaunted in the faces of your closest confidants. But lo and behold, this very same partnership can suffer some bad ones too that often stick out in your head like a sore thumb. One minute, he was the sweetest guy and you couldn’t get enough of him. The next minute, he is showing his ass and getting on the last good nerve that you have.

How could this be possible? How could the same person who brought so much joy into your life cause you so much pain?

Being involved in a relationship is not an easy thing to do. And to the overly optimistic individuals out there who think relationships are a walk in the park haven’t a clue. You can almost think of them as second jobs with the amount of work that some of us put into them. Personal sacrifices have to be made in order for them to truly work out for the best. You give a little, and he does the same in return. But by no means should the sacrifice that you make for your relationship be at the continuous expense of your feelings.

The roller coaster of love can have its fun and memorable moments. Just like the real thing, it can take you to great heights, where you feel like you are on top of the world. But with those great parts of this ride, you will also run into those twists and turns that may not always be to your liking. Or experience that sudden drop in your partnership that you didn’t see coming. Yes, relationships do involve putting your feelings on the line. And they are not always picture perfect, with no flaws at all. But when you get to the point where you begin to feel emotionally drained by someone, that could be your sign to officially hang it up.

Are you the person you require your mate to be? It's time for some self-reflection.

By: Amanda Anderson

So I'm not the avid dater I used to be, but I figured that I would dust off my old list just for kicks. And when I mention this particular list, I'm referring to THE list. Every woman has had a list whether it's some shabby piece of notebook paper hidden away from your younger days or permanently scribbled in your mind; It's clear that we know just exactly what we want from a man as we climb up in age. And it's nothing wrong with having a few demands when it comes to love, but it is a problem to require from others what you don't even require from yourself.

In my early 20s, my girlfriends and I would dish over cocktails just what we had to have in a man. We sincerely believed our requests were realistic and rational, and found ourselves severely disappointed when these requests were not fully met failed relationship after failed relationship. We just could not fathom how on earth these simple needs were so difficult for men to fulfill. It's not like we were asking for a six figure salary making brother, who happened to model on the side, had the perfect chiseled body and biceps, and fed the hungry while maintaining several fortune 500 companies.
We opted for realism.

What we did want is a man who had the maturity verses the swag, intelligence, and a giving heart that could make a relationship a prosperous one. Instead, we got college degree toting brothers who could give us stimulating conversations, graduated top of their class, but had a level of selfishness that made the relationship unbearable.

This happened so frequently that we grew tired of even discussing what we just didn't have.

Why is it that such amazing women attract some of the most selfish men?

It's a scenario that we see time and time again. The successful sister who worked her behind off in college, fought the injustices of corporate America, and landed on top as the forerunner at her dream job, but couldn't quite land the same amount of success in love.

She's the type of woman that any man with sense should be chasing down the aisle...she should have options. Instead, she has the educated brother who's smart enough to perform well in the workplace, but he just can't manage to get over himself long enough to think about what she wants.

Sound familiar?

Sometimes we get so lost in these lists and having the things that we want, that we naturally begin to forget about the needs of others. When we scribble down what our dream man must be like, we don't take the time to think about whether we ourselves are a dream to the man we so desperately seek.

You want a man that's considerate, giving, intelligent, and ambitious...well how about yourself?

Are you giving, intelligent, and an ambitious young woman?

Or have you even considered that just maybe he too has some important things that he needs to be just as happy?

After growing tired from poisonous relationships with selfish men, I realized that I too had been selfish to a very damaging degree. I had went on and on about what I wanted, but not once did I have the maturity to look at myself in the mirror to see if I was a beckon of happiness to my dream man.

Our partners are usually an adult size mirror version of ourselves. We complain and complain some more about these horrid brothers, but in some instances, they are a clear reflection of ourselves at that particular moment of our lives. Successful, intelligent, but selfish as hell with a long list or requirements that mention nothing of what they plan to give in return. Their resume is love worthy, but their "all about me" attitudes are not.

That selfish brother came right into the picture after you selfishly scribbled down what you wanted from a man. He may have had the degree and the drive, but he was too selfish to make the relationship work.

You're back at square one again because you forgot one important rule:

In love, you have to become what you want now in order to get what you want later.

It's the law of attraction.

When we are able to give what we need to others, someone will come along who is willing to give us those needs in return. A relationship has to be 50/50, so flip on the other side of your list and check to make sure you're giving what you are demanding.

And just maybe you will be ahead of the other list hugging sisters, and be the type of woman that makes brothers want nothing more than to leave you satisfied and needing nothing. It starts with a list and ends with a woman who can see past herself.

Look in the mirror and you'll be able to see the bigger picture.

Are you the dream that you require your man to be?
