'Mamma Mia!' to Wrap Broadway Run After 14 Years
Mamma Mia!, one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history, will wrap its Broadway production on Sept. 5, 2015, at the Broadhurst Theatre, global producer Judy Craymer announced on Thursday (April 9).

One of five current musicals to have been on a Broadway stage for more than 10 years, the musical will drop the curtain on the production after 5,765 total performances.

Rewinding the Charts: 40 Years Ago, Mamma Mia! ABBA-Mania Began

The musical -- which features the music of ABBA -- opened on Oct. 18, 2001, at Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre following the success of the 1999 London premiere and recently passed the runs of Broadway musicals Rent, Miss Saigon, 42nd Street, Grease and Fiddler on the Roof.

In 14 years on the stage, Mamma Mia! is said to have grossed more than $2 billion.

The musical was adapted into a feature film in 2008, which starred Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Amanda Seyfried, and became the most successful live movie musical to date, grossing $600 million worldwide.

ABBA songs performed in the musical include "Dancing Queen," "The Winner Takes It All," "Money, Money, Money" and "Take a Chance on Me."

Mamma Mia! was written by Catherine Johnson, with music and lyrics by ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, and directed by Phyllida Lloyd.
