The Rematch: Regular Season Kicks Off With Saints And Vikings
By: Taren Vaughan
What better way to start out the regular season than with the Saints and the Vikings. If you recall last season, the Saints were the reason why the Vikings missed last year’s Super Bowl game. But Brett Favre and company were ready for war.
With 34 seconds left in the 2nd quarter, Favre hit Vinsanthe Shiancoe for a touchdown, ending the half only 2 points down. Vikings running back Adrian Peterson added some steam to the offense, running for 87 yards on 19 carries against a feisty New Orleans' defense.
Going into the 3rd quarter, the Vikings were well within striking distance and made things interesting for a moment. But they just couldn’t seem to get it going offensively.
Saints kicker Garrett Hartley was having some trouble getting the ball to go his way as he missed two field goals during the game. Word is that he does better in pressure filled situations. The way he missed those point blank range field goals that statement just may have some truth behind it.
But last night, missed field goals didn’t hinder the Saints as they defeated the Vikings in their regular season opener. Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who completed 27 of 36 passes for 237 yards and threw for a touchdown , commented on Thursday night’s win over the Vikings:
"We're not used to 14-9 victories, but we're used to winning"
The Vikings went down to the Saint 14-9. The “Lombardi Gras” celebration still continues on across “Who Dat” nation for now. The Saints will face the San Francisco 49ers on September 20th.
