Popular retail drugstore puts condoms behind the counter.

By: Taren Vaughan

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past couple of years, it is quite obvious that we are in a recession. And during times like these, the level of thievery is at an all time high. From car systems, and even random grocery store items, people are taking advantage of their “five finger discounts" left and right. But are they becoming so desperate that they have resorted to stealing condoms from their local pharmacies? Anytime a drugstore takes it upon themselves to put merchandise behind the counter it’s probably due to a number of thieves in the vicinity. However, this retail chain location stashed away the latex for a different reason.

As most of us know, condoms are normally kept out on the sales floor for anybody to get it them. And unlike Plan B, you do not have to show identification to buy them. But that has changed now for a CVS store based out of Tennessee. The store just recently started keeping their supply of condoms behind the counter, out of reach from all customers. Now here’s the thing, some of us, even at the age of full fledged adulthood, do not like everyone seeing that we are buying condoms. So can you imagine how a young teenager would feel having to ask a sales associate to pull them a box from the back? What makes matters worse is that this particular CVS is located near a college campus, the one group of people that need to have condoms well within their reach.

With all the STDs being passed around out here, why in God’s name would CVS lock up condoms?

In the world of the sexually active, there are already numerous excuses as to why people don’t use condoms. “I don’t like the way they feel” or “I didn’t have any on me” are some of the many excuses that are given. Now the reason behind not using a condom can be blamed on the local drugstore making it too hard to get them. Why would you give people yet another excuse for not wearing them?

Having condoms on display in the drugstore is not a way of saying “Okay kids, go out and have all the sex that you want to”. That’s not the case at all. Making condoms accessible to young teenagers is not persuading them to have sex. It is merely providing them with the protection that they need if they do choose to go that route. Out of all honesty, the age at which the American youth is becoming sexually active decreases year by year. And we must remember that condoms are available, free of charge at local health departments and campus health centers. So if it’s “negative influence” that CVS is concerned with, I guess they are not the only ones at fault when it comes to that. But I feel like CVS is steering away from the real message here and that is that condoms are there to protect us. At the end of the day, if young consumers can’t get their condoms from CVS, I’m sure they can find them at other stores. Thanks CVS. You have officially added to the problem. All I can say is that I hope this doesn’t start a lasting trend with other retail pharmacies.

Contrary to belief, men suffer from breast cancer too.

By: Taren Vaughan

Breast cancer is a disease that has plagued the African American community for decades. Even with the scientific progress that has been made concerning breast cancer, it still continues to take the lives of millions of people worldwide. It is a known fact that the disease heavily affects the female gender, namely black women. But did you ever stop to think about the number of men that suffer from it also?

According to the National Cancer Institute, less than one percent of cancer cases are found in the male population. The most common age for men to develop this form of cancer is between ages 60 to 70 years old. This percentage may seem minute compared to the percentage of women who have breast cancer. However, one organization in particular feels that this number is well worth fighting for. The Sigma Phi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is set to host their third annual “Real Men Wear Pink” fashion show. Participating male models will walk the runway in an assortment of pink and green clothing; the event will also include a dinner for attendees. Proceeds from the event will go towards the fight against breast cancer.

Having major organizations stand up for this cause is one thing. But when the survivors themselves speak out and actively involve themselves in the movement, the impact becomes that much greater.

Bret Miller was diagnosed with breast cancer as a college graduate. Can you imagine one of the most exciting times of your life being stifled by this shocking news? Fortunately for Miller, the cancer was in its first stage and had not yet spread to other organs. Like many other cancer survivors, he had to undergo rounds of chemotherapy, in hopes to lessen the chances of the cancer coming back. As a way to spread the awareness, Miller, along with 27,000+ people, participated in the Komen Greater Kansas City Race for the Cure. His mother, Peggy Miller, spoke out on the importance of men knowing that breast cancer affects both men and women:

“Awareness is the key for men because they don’t think they can get it. They don’t think anything of it. They’ve got to start talking to you guys, too”

Mrs. Miller is right. There are plenty of men out there who think that it's unrealistic for them to develop breast cancer. Actor Richard Roundtree, best known for his role as "Shaft", admitted that he too was oblivious to the fact that men could get breast cancer:

“When the doctor said ‘breast cancer,’ I thought he was questioning my manhood.”

More men should be aware of the statistics concerning breast cancer. African American males should especially take note of this disease as they are much more susceptible to numerous forms of cancer in general than men of other races. Although the number of men with breast cancer is low, that is one too many. Members of the black community should be aware of how this disease affects African American males. Despite what many may think, breast cancer is not just a woman’s disease.

Dairy products giving you trouble? Here are some ways to decrease the side effects.

By: Taren Vaughan

Being lactose intolerant is no fun at all, especially for those who constantly crave ice cream and candy rich with milk chocolate. And unfortunately for us, we are one of the main racial groups that is affected by this condition. But the good news is that you don’t have to cut dairy products completely out of your diet altogether. There are several ways to get around your dairy product woes that won’t send you straight to the bathroom:

Little By Little

As with most foods that upset your stomach, portion control can be a sure fire solution to your problem. For the lactose intolerant individual, consuming dairy products in small amounts at a time can limit the effects they have on your body. As this will not completely eliminate these problems, it can allow you to still enjoy a glass of milk every now and then without getting sick.

Change Your Flavor

Regular milk contains high amounts of lactose, which makes it an unfavorable beverage for the lactose intolerant individual. Soy, goat, and rice milk are available to those in search of milk alternatives. Surprisingly, many people have been reported to enjoy these types of milk and even suggest that they taste better than the regular stuff. Eating goat cheese instead of regular American cheese is also a favorable method for people who suffer from lactose intolerance.

Stay Lactose-Free

As hard as it may seem to be, finding products that don’t contain any lactose is very possible to do. Numerous grocery stores stock lactose-free cheese and milk for those who are lactose intolerant or who just prefer a different option when it comes to their dairy products. Staying lactose-free will definitely decrease those awful stomach issues.

Pop A Few Pills

For those who have not yet developed a taste for soy milk, taking a few pills may do the trick for you. Deemed as highly safe products, lactose pills can limit the episodes of an upset stomach after downing some of your favorite milk based products. Going the pill route is a popular method. But if you are one of those forgetful people, you may not remember to always have your pills handy.

A caloric comparison of some of our favorite foods.

By: Taren Vaughan

Keeping track of the amount of calories that you consume can be a very tiring process. Having to remember to write down what you eat and how many calories are in it can be a job in itself. Can’t there be an easier way to do this? Luckily, two masterminds got together to produce a book that will eliminate our calorie counting woes. “Eat This, Not That” was written with a collaborative effort from Men’s Health’s David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding. The book gives readers a descriptive comparison between multiple food items, noting which one is the better choice. They also go on to give the official caloric breakdown for each food item along with tips on how to avoid those not so healthy foods and beverages. Here's a look at some foods and drinks we should pass on:

A Night Out With The Girls

A night out on the town with the girls often calls for a cosmo or two. Mixed drinks are a must when it comes to social gatherings or other fun-filled festivities. Unfortunately, even just a few of our favorite cocktails can result in a quick calorie overload.
Try This:
Screwdriver (8 oz)
130 calories
13 g carbs

Say No To That:
Margarita (8 oz)

500 calories

32 g carbs

A screwdriver may not be as fabulous as your beloved margarita. But it won’t be sending you to the gym quite as fast.

Late Night Snacks

Even after having three full course meals, some of us are still left starving. A midnight snack will definitely hit the spot. Which one should we go for?

Try This:
Sun Chips (15 chips/1 oz)
140 calories
6 g fat
120 mg sodiumSay No To That:
Smartfood White Cheddar Popcorn
160 calories
10 g fat
290 mg sodium

Yes, popcorn can be a very light snack that is normally not too harmful. But when drenched in cheese and butter, it takes away from its healthy appeal.

Satisfying Your Sweet Tooth

I don’t know about you but I have to admit it. Sweets are my weakness. Especially during that time of the month, most of us stay craving something sugary to get us through the day. Before you dig into your favorite tub of ice cream, you may want to check the label first.

Try This:
Edy’s Slow Churned Rich & Creamy Black Cherry Vanilla Swirl Yogurt (1/2 cup)
100 calories
3 g fat
13 g sugar

Say No To That:
Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Fudge Ice Cream (1/2 cup)
290 calories
18 g fat
24 g sugar

Not only is Haagen-Dazs expensive as all get out, these flavorful treats are loaded with sugar and fat. I have personally tried Edy’s Slow Churned ice cream and yogurt. Don’t let the numbers fool you. It is just as good as the regular stuff.

Family Affairs

Family gatherings, especially cookouts, are occasions where we have a tendency to go buck wild at the dinner table. So many choices lie before your eyes. You often have a hard time choosing what to eat. Before you jump head first into your aunt’s famous macaroni casserole, peep some of the items that you may not want to OD on:

Try This:
Filet mignon (6 oz)

260 calories
11g fat
200 mg sodium

Say No To That:
Cheeseburger (4 oz)

630 calories
41 g

735 sodium

Minus the cheese and its bready surroundings, a hamburger is not that bad. It’s what is added to it that makes the calories it contains go sky high. Stick to a nice, juicy tenderloin for those backyard barbeques.

The Quickies

Fast food meals are by far some of the most unhealthy food choices known to mankind. Sure they taste good and don’t require you to slave for hours in the kitchen over a hot stove. But after seeing how many calories some of these quick meals contain, you may be more inclined to fire up that oven of yours.

Try This:
6-inch Double Roast Beef Sub (Subway)
360 calories

7 g fat
1300 mg sodium

Say No To That:
6-inch Tuna Sub (Subway)

530 calories

31 g fat

1010 mg sodium

Despite what many of us may think, there is such thing as an unhealthy sub. The biggest difference between these two meals lies in the excessive amount of mayonnaise that one of them contains. Go easy on the mayo and you will have a pretty healthy quickie.

This article was inspired by the “Eat This, Not That” book collection. They are available in retail stores, bookstores and are available for online purchase. Ladies, these books are a must have as they give a quick yet through rundown of your favorite foods and what they contain.

Natural remedies to cure sleeplessness.

By: Amanda Anderson

The proper amount of rest is necessary to good health and peace of mind, so nights full of tossing and turning can be very burdensome in a life that has enough stress as it is. While it may seem like the easiest method to getting sleep would be some prescribed medication with a long list of unhealthy side effects, there are actually plenty of natural alternatives that are just as effective. Before you schedule that visit with a trusted doctor, here are a few natural remedies to cure sleep deprivation and put an end to those many sleepless nights.

1. Establish a steady bedtime routine.

Set a time that you can see yourself realistically going to bed each day. It should be a time that will work well on the weekends, as well as each one of your work days. Make sure the time will allow you to get at least 7 hours worth of sleep, as this is the suggested amount of sleep each person needs to have a healthy sleep life.

2. Lower your intake of alcohol, caffeine, and stimulants.

You may need a couple of cups of coffee daily to survive a busy week, but too much caffeine can cause troubles in sleeping. Don't overdo it with the caffeine, and try to lower your intake as much as possible. Learn how to go a couple days without any coffee or other caffeinated beverages and you should see an improvement in your sleep routine.

Alcohol can ruin one's sleep life as well, even if you opt to only consume alcohol early in the day. Avoid too much alcohol consumption and high use of stimulants.

3. Stay away from heavy meals in the evening.

It takes lots of energy for your body to digest meals, so larger meals naturally require more work. This work could cause you to stay up longer than you should and even cause digestive problems.

4. Use relaxation techniques.

Certain breathing methods can put an end to your sleepless nights. Some people also tend to rely on meditation techniques, massages, as well as relaxing hot baths. Try one of these relaxation techniques to see a difference in your routine.

5. Get good exercise.

A good work out can put you to sleep if you make it part of your daily routine. If you aren't an exercise buff, you can start off with at least 45 minutes of aerobic exercise.

6. Increase your intake of herbs.

Certain herbs such as magnesium, calcium, cordyceps, ashwaganda, coenzyme Q10, eleuthero or siberian ginseng are effective in battling insomnia.

7. Repetition exercises could make you sleep easier.

Mantram, a method that involves repeating various verbs or words phrases can help put the mind in an relaxing state. You can choose any word or phrase that you think will work best for your memory, and try to repeat it until you fall asleep. During the exercise, if you notice your mind is starting to wonder, shift your focus back to the exercise.

Studies prove that position of belly button enhances athletic ability for different sports.

By: Taren Vaughan

It is blatantly obvious that when it comes to sports, some people have the upper hand. Having more muscle mass and height can determine how well an athlete performs. Sometimes even gender differences can determine how athletically capable one is. But did you ever think that your belly button could make you run farther or swim faster? As hard as it is to believe, the type of belly button that you have can have a huge impact on your athletic performance.

Now before you let your mind wonder too far, it’s not exactly about what type of belly button that you have. But it is more so about how it is positioned on your body.

According to a study that was published in the International Journal of Design and Nature and Ecodynamics, researchers found that where a person’s navel lies can determine how good of a swimmer or runner they have the potential to be. Duke University professor Andre Bejan noted why there is such a significant difference between West African runners and European runners:

“It so happens that in the architecture of the human body of West African-origin runners, the center of gravity is significantly higher than in runners of European origin,” which puts them at an advantage in sprints on the track.”

This stat deems to be fairly accurate. We all know which race tends to dominate when it comes to track and field events. For decades, both Africans and African Americans have surpassed runners of other races, winning gold medals and doing so at record-beating times. So there is not much of a secret there. Bejan also went on to discuss the differences in swimmers:

“The swimmer who makes the bigger wave is the faster swimmer, and a longer torso makes a bigger wave. Europeans have a three-percent longer torso than West Africans, which gives them a 1.5-percent speed advantage in the pool,”

Who would have thought that such a small part of your body can refine your breast stroke?

Of course maintaining a healthy body weight and working out on a routine basis can increase an athlete’s physical drive. But if your body is composed in certain way, there is only so much that it will allow you to do.

IUDs are just as safe and effective as birth control pills

By: Taren Vaughan

Researchers have continuously come up with multiple ways for women to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Out of all the contraceptive methods out on the market, birth control pills are highly favored amongst the others. They have been said to be not only effective in preventing pregnancy. But birth control pills have also been said to be relatively safe, with the exception of a small few. Although this is true, there are other contraceptive methods that are just as harmless.

Intrauterine devices, also known as IUDs, are forms of birth control that have been around for many years now. Similar to the vaginal ring, IUDs are actually inserted into a woman’s uterus, preventing conception. Even though the device is small in size, it has caused great fear amongst women and even doctors over the years.

According to the National Survey of Family Growth, 1 percent of U.S. girls ages 15-19used IUDs for birth control from 2006 to 2008, compared to the 15.2 percent that used birth-control pills. Sounds like teenage girls were not too pressed to test out the IUDs. As the age group expanded, the usage percentage for IUDs did climb to 3.4 percent for women ages 15-44 for the same time period. But the percentage still remained small.

Why are IUDs not used as often as other birth control methods?

Author Sophia Yen, MPH, stated her opinion as to why the devices were a last resort for the majority of women:

“The IUD has an undeserved bad reputation both in the public and among physicians. There’s the myth that they’re not appropriate for women who haven’t yet given birth, and the myth that they increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease.”

Circulated myths can be a lead cause as to why women are not fond of using IUDs for pregnancy prevention. But I believe that some women are just opposed to using devices altogether. Having to physically stick any kind of contraption into your vagina or any other organ in your body can be rather overwhelming for some women. Even as adults, some of us still suffer from “tampon phobia”, feeling like they will fall out or be extremely uncomfortable.

But contraceptive methods like IUDs and vaginal rings come in handy for women who tend to be forgetful. Remembering to take a tablet at the same time every day is not a simple task for some of us. So using a device like an IUD should definitely be considered. And for those who are trying to keep some extra money in your pockets, IUDs may be something that you want to look into. Dropping $15, $20 or sometimes even $60 a month for birth control pills can set you back financially. So why not get something that is just as effective and saves you a boat load of cash?

The thought of having something sitting in your uterus other than a baby may frighten some females, especially those of younger age groups. And that is very understandable. But researchers have confirmed that IUDs are nothing to be afraid of.

Adding fish oil to your diet could lower your chances of developing breast cancer.

By: Amanda Anderson

A new study indicates that fish oil may prevent the development of breast cancer. In a recent survey taken amongst postmenopausal women, researchers found that fish oil could possibly guard against breast cancer. The study does not necessarily show a cause and effect relationship between breast cancer and fish oil, but it does provide the necessary research to get the ball rolling on discovering just how effective fish oil can be in prevention of the deadly cancer that has taken the lives of many women.

The study, which was found in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, indicated that women who take fish oil supplements are less likely to contract breast cancer.

In the study, 35,016 older women with no history of breast cancer and who reported taking fish oil supplements on a regular basis, had a 32% reduced risk for developing invasive ductal breast cancer. These numbers are in comparison to women who reported that they did not regularly take fish oil supplements.

While the researchers still aren't clear on why fish oil lowers the risk of breast cancer, they state that the oil is anti-inflammatory. In many studies, inflammation has been linked to cancer.

So how can you increase your intake of fish oil and fight your chances of developing breast cancer? Researchers suggest taking one gram of fish oil a day or eating two servings of wild salmon a week. Also be sure to do research on any supplements you are considering taking. Most importantly, before you make the changes to your diet, be sure to speak with your doctor since fish oil is a blood thinner.
